The victorious Indian cricket team remained in Barbados after a Category 4 cyclone hit the Caribbean island of Bridgetown, Barbados, early on Monday, delaying their return home by at least another day. The Rohit Sharma-led team has been staying at a five-star hotel since defeating South Africa in the T20 World Cup final on Saturday. As expected, hurricanes and deadly storms hit Barbados and nearby islands on Monday. This country, where people live, has been closed since Sunday evening.
While the international airport was closed until further notice, there were also water and power outages.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah commented: “Like you, we are stuck here. First of all, we have to see how we can get the players and everyone out of here safely and then we will think about congratulations when we reach India.” We are here before the final.
The team was supposed to fly to India on a charter flight along with senior BCCI officials, including Jay Shah, but this was not possible due to congestion at the airport. BCCI is also trying to dissuade Indian media from this whirlwind tour.
“We tried a charter flight on Monday, but since the airport was closed, that option was eliminated. There is no plane that can land or take off.
‘The plan is to fly to India from oil in America or Europe. We are in talks with airport officials. The airport is expected to remain closed until Tuesday afternoon. If the weather is nice, it may open earlier. Wind speed must decrease before flight operations can begin. You can’t fight nature. “We have to wait and see,” sources told PTI.
