“I learned shadows in volleyball”: Indian shuttler Satwiksairaj Rankireddy

Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who won a bronze medal at the 2022 World Cup in Tokyo and won a gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games, are the first Indian boys to achieve world rankings in badminton and will represent India in Paris in 2024.

The duo met Dinesh Karthik on JioCinema’s ‘Get Set Gold’, where they opened up about their playing, discussed the language barrier they faced early in their partnership and their shared love for Indian music.

Holding the Guinness World Record for the fastest, Satwiksairaj reached a speed of 565 km per hour and gave an insight into the technology behind his movement.

He said: “I learned to attack in volleyball, how players jump and break. He looks like a hero and how I started learning to jump when I was little. No one taught me and I think there is a certain success in breaking, so I try to do that. I take the environment to understand where my opponents are. Before, I usually played corners and hit the line, but now I try to hit the opponent’s body. ”

While Shetty and Rankireddy welcomed Karthik into their coaching regime, they also discussed the nature of the opposition and how he had surprised them time and time again. Shetty explained in detail how to play the second game and what differences other than strength determine his plays. He then made Karthik do exercises to stay fit and build his muscles.

“When we talk about doubles, the game is not just about strength. The game is more about defence, net play and how to lift correctly. Defense is another important part of the game. There are a lot of things to think about, and it’s not just about energy. ”
