Three time IPL Winner – 2012, 2014, and 2024
The seventeenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has come to an end. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have lifted the trophy for the third time after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Even though the final was a one-sided match, the journey KKR has been through has been nothing short of ‘Wow!’.
The champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have had one of the best seasons any team has ever played. KKR began their campaign with a bang. Their first match being against the finalists SRH. KKR scored 208 and set a target of 209 for SRH to chase. They restricted SRH to 204 and won the game by 4 runs. This match was like a statement that, “We are here to win.” This match not only saw a great performance on the batting front but also saw some fit fielders on the ground.
The team led by Shreyas Iyer managed to score 200+ runs in 6 games out of the 14 games (since 2 matches were abandoned due to rains) they played this season.
Let’s have a look at some interesting stats of KKR’s dominance this season.
- 3 titles won. Only two teams, Mumbai India (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have more titles than them.
- KKR lost only 3 matches in the entire season, the fewest by a team in any IPL season, along with Rajasthan Royals (RR).
- Restricted the opposition to the lowest score in the finals. KKR restricted SRH to 113 runs, which is the lowest by any team in the finals. The previous lowest was 125 by CSK against MI in 2013.
- 57 balls remained when KKR finished the chase in the finals. It is the biggest in an IPL playoff game. The previous biggest was KKR’s win with 38 balls in hand in Qualifier 1 against SRH.
- KKR bowled out the opposition in six matches. It is the most number of matches by any team in a single edition of IPL. The previous record was, four times held by MI.
- 1.17 was the ratio between KKR’s bat run rate and the ball’s economy rate this season. This is the highest for any IPL team in any season. The previous record was 1.14 which was held by MI.
- Mitchell Starc became the first player to be named the Player of the Match, twice in the playoffs of an IPL season.
- 3 – The number of times Sunil Narine has won the Most Valuable Player in IPL. It is the most won by any player. He surpassed Shane Watson and Andre Russel, who have won the twice.
- Shreyas Iyer recorded the fastest fifty in the finals by scoring 50 runs in just 24 balls. He jointly shares the record with Suresh Raina and David Warner who has also scored 50 off 24 balls in the finals.
- Venkatesh Iyer has now scored 50+ runs in 5 playoff matches. Only Suresh Raina (seven) has more than 50+ scores in the playoffs.
- 4 – The number of players with multiple ducks in the playoffs in an IPL edition.
Looking at these stats one thing is for sure, KKR deserved to lift the cup. The players and the coaches gave their all to ensure their victory. All the fans will surely be waiting for IPL 2025.
