Praveen-Hooda

Following the suspension of boxer Parveen Hooda, India would lose the Asian Games medal.

Parveen qualified for the Paris Olympics by winning the bronze medal in the women’s 57kg weight class at the Asian Games the previous year.

India is going to forfeit its Asian Games medal in Hangzhou after boxer Parveen Hooda, who won the bronze, received a 22-month suspension for failing to provide his whereabouts. Parveen qualified for the Paris Olympics by winning the bronze medal in the women’s 57kg weight class at the Asian Games the previous year. But earlier this month, she was placed under suspension by the International Testing Agency (ITA), which oversees results management, for her repeated failure to report her movements within a 12-month period.

“The ITA confirms that boxer Parveen Hooda has been suspended for a 22-month period, effective until 16 July 2025, after committing three whereabouts failures within a twelve-month period as defined in article 2.4 of the International Boxing Association anti-doping rules (IBA ADR)1,” a statement from the ITA stated.

The statement went on, “The athlete’s results obtained between December 11, 2022 and May 17, 2024 are disqualified in addition to the period of ineligibility.”

The COVID-19 pandemic in China caused the 2022 Asian Games to be postponed by a year. The games took place from September 23 to October 8, 2023, within the time frame set by the ITA. As a result, Parveen will not be able to keep her bronze medal.

India’s total medal count at the 2023 Asian Games will drop from 107 to 106 as a result of this outcome. It won’t, however, affect the nation’s fourth-place finish in the overall medal standings.

Indian boxing suffered an unprecedented embarrassment when it was forced to give up its Olympic quota for women’s 57 kg boxing. Bronze medallist at the Commonwealth Games Jaismine Lamboria will compete for the 57kg quota in the final Olympic qualifier, which gets underway in Bangkok on Friday.

In boxing, the nation receives the quota rather than the competitor.
