Uncovering different Olympic Events

The Olympic Games is the biggest stage for an athlete to showcase his / her talent and attempt to gain the greatest glory. Every four years the world comes together to celebrate the pinnacle of athletic achievement. It is the dream of every sportsperson to participate in this tournament and represent their respective nation.

Originally it is believed that the history of the Games goes back around 3000 years, to the Peloponnese in Ancient Greece. These sports contests were organized every four years. In 1894, Pierre de Coubertin launched his plan to revive the Games, and in 1896 the very first edition of the Games from the modern era was held in Athens.

However, very few people know that there are more than three types of Olympic Games. In this blog, we will have a look at the different types of Olympic Games.

Summer Olympic Games

The first international Olympic Games of the modern era was held in 1896 in Athens, Greece. It was held from the 6th to the 15th of April. Fourteen nations and 241 athletes had taken part in these Games. The first modern-day edition of the Olympics featured 9 different sports. Today there are 40-42 sports that feature the Games and over 206 countries participate in it.

The best talent from across the world qualify and participate in these Games. Every athlete takes pride in adorning their national jersey and giving their best to get the greatest glory of their careers. The USA is the most successful country in the Games bagging 2629 medals.

Winter Olympic Games

The Winter Olympics is a major international multi-sport event held every four years. As the name suggests, all the sports in these Games are practiced on snow and ice. The very first Winter Olympic Games was held in 1924 hosted by France. A total of 258 athletes from 16 nations participated in the first edition of the Games which were played from the 25th of January to the 5th of February.

The first edition featured 5 sports, today the Games feature 15 sports. It’s good to see that sports in such extreme conditions are also recognized and valued. Norway is the most successful country in the Games with over 405 medals.

Paralympic Games

The Paralympics is a major international multi-sport event held every four years right after the Olympics. Paralympics has two editions like the Olympics: The Summer Paralympics and The Winter Paralympics. In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition involving 16 World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries. Competitors from Holland also participated four years later which slowly became an international movement.

The first Olympic-style contest for the disabled was held in Rome in 1960. 400 participants from 23 countries participated in the Games. A total of 8 sports were played. The USA is the most successful country with 2175 medals at the Games.

Youth Olympics

The Youth Olympics is a major international multi-sport event held every four years. As the name suggests, it is participated by athletes that are in the age range of 15-18 years. Like the Olympic Games, the Youth Olympics also has two editions: The Summer Games and The Winter Games. The very first edition of the Youth Olympics was held in 2010 in Singapore.

It was played from the 14th of August to the 26th of August. A total of 3524 athletes from 204 countries participated in the Games. 26 sports were played in the first edition of the games. China is the most successful country at the Youth Olympics winning 205 medals.

Special Olympics World Games

Special Olympics World Games is a major event, held every four years, and is organized for people with intellectual disabilities. Like the Olympics, the Special Olympics World Games also has two editions: The Summer Games and The Winter Games. The first Special Olympics World Games was held in 1968 in the USA. A total of 1000 athletes from 2 nations competed across 3 sports.
